Copilot Money is the most beautifully designed Apple-native budgeting app — but its AI and aggregation still run in the cloud. Here is how Thrust compares as a fully on-device alternative, and where Copilot is still the better choice.

Copilot Money is probably the best-looking personal finance app on iOS. It is built natively for the Apple ecosystem, has a thoughtful design culture, and was one of the first apps to add Apple Card transaction aggregation through Plaid’s 2025 integration. If aesthetics and Apple-native polish are what you want, Copilot is a serious answer.

But Copilot still ships the same architecture as everyone else under the polish: Plaid in front, cloud servers behind. Its AI categorization runs on their backend. Your transactions live on their database.

Thrust starts from a different premise. No bank linking, no Plaid, all data on-device. This article compares the two honestly, including the things Copilot does that Thrust intentionally does not.

Copilot is a subscription product. The annual plan brings the effective price down, but there is no permanent free tier and the trial is short.

Thrust is free to download. Premium features are sold as in-app purchases. No ads, no data monetization — and structurally there is no data to monetize, since none of it leaves the device.

Copilot stores your data on its cloud backend. Transactions are ingested through Plaid (primary) or MX, which means a third-party aggregator is holding either your bank credentials or an OAuth token and pulling your transaction history on a recurring schedule.

Copilot’s AI categorization runs on their servers. When the app suggests a category for a new transaction, the suggestion is generated by their backend model, which has access to your transaction history.

Copilot’s privacy policy is reasonable — they state they do not sell personal data and use SOC 2 controls — but the architecture is still a multi-party one. Three companies have visibility into your spending: your bank, the aggregator, and Copilot.

The Apple Card integration added in 2025 is genuinely useful, but it works through Plaid’s Apple Card support. The data still flows through the aggregator.

Thrust

Thrust does not connect to your bank. Transactions are entered manually, dictated by voice with a live waveform, or imported by CSV. They are stored locally on your iPhone with AES-256 encryption, with keys in the Secure Enclave — Apple’s hardware-isolated chip, which even Thrust’s own code cannot extract from.

The AI CFO runs on-device with GPU-accelerated inference. There is no API call to a remote model. Ghost Mode disables persistence entirely for sensitive sessions.

The honest trade-off: you do the entry. Voice and quick-entry shortcuts make most transactions a few taps, but Copilot’s automatic sync is faster for someone with many accounts.

Copilot is built around a single user with multiple accounts. The dashboards and recurring-transaction visualizations are some of the best in the category. If you have a US bank account, a US brokerage, an Apple Card, and a typical credit card mix, Copilot will assemble all of it into a single beautiful view.

Thrust takes the same use case in a different direction. It is less focused on aggregating US-domiciled accounts and more focused on classes Copilot does not cover well: on-chain crypto across multiple blockchains, multi-currency holdings, and assets where there is no Plaid endpoint to begin with.

If automatic Apple Card and US-bank aggregation is the feature you came for, Copilot is the better fit. It is one of the cleanest implementations available.

If you have decided that an aggregator with persistent read access to your bank is the part of the system you want to remove, Thrust is built around that decision. The data entry is faster than it looks, but it is still entry.

Copilot’s AI is one of its strongest features. The categorization model is genuinely good, and it improves over time as it sees more of your transactions on the server.

Thrust’s AI is structurally different: smaller models, optimized to run on the phone with GPU acceleration. It works without an internet connection, and your transactions are never used to train or improve a remote model. The honest comparison is that a server-side model will sometimes catch patterns an on-device one will not — but the cost is that the server-side model needs your data to do so.
