How Thrust Works

A transparent look at the financial logic behind every number in Thrust.

Account Balance

Every account has a balance that reflects exactly what you own or owe. Thrust calculates balance from your transaction history.

:
Performance: Balances are recalculated on every transaction change and cached for up to 5 minutes.

Net Worth

Net Worth is the total value of everything you own minus everything you owe. It is the single most important number for your overall financial health.

Counts as an Asset

  • Cash accounts
  • Savings accounts
  • Investment accounts
  • Cryptocurrency portfolios
  • Alternative assets

Counts as a Liability

  • Credit card accounts only (balance taken as absolute value)
Tip: You can exclude specific accounts from net worth (e.g., a business account) — open the account → Edit → toggle Include in Net Worth.

Available to Spend

Available to Spend answers: how much can I spend right now without missing upcoming payments or breaking my budgets? It deducts four categories of upcoming obligations from your liquid balance.

1

Liquid Balance

Only cash and savings accounts count. Investments, crypto, and alternative assets are excluded — they cannot be spent immediately.

2

Upcoming Expenses

All recurring payments (subscriptions, rent, loans) due in the next 30 days are deducted in full.

3

Budget Reserves

For each active budget, the proportional remaining amount is reserved: (remaining budget ÷ days in period) × lookAhead days.

4

Goal Reserves

For each active goal with a deadline, the required monthly contribution is proportionally reserved.

5

Minimum Reserve

An optional custom buffer you can set in Settings to always keep a safety margin.

If you have no budgets, goals, or recurring payments set up, Available to Spend equals your total cash and savings balance.

How Budgets Work

A budget tracks spending in one or more expense categories over a set period (week, month, quarter, or year).

Thrust scans all expense transactions in the budget's categories within the current period and sums their amounts. This calculation runs automatically whenever you add, edit, or delete a transaction.

0 – 79% On track (green)
80 – 99% Approaching limit (orange)
100%+ Over budget (red)

Rollover

When rollover is enabled, unspent budget carries forward to the next period. Overspending reduces the next period's available amount.

Example: $500 budget, spent $420 → rollover $80 → next period available $580.
Note: Spent amounts refresh automatically after every transaction change. Edits are reflected in your budgets immediately.

Income & Expenses for a Period

The Analytics tab shows your exact income and expenses for any time period you select.

Transfers between your own accounts are excluded from cash flow — moving money from savings to checking is not income or an expense.
Open the Analytics tab → select any time period (week, month, quarter, year, or custom) → the Income vs Expenses card shows the full breakdown by category.

Credit Cards

Credit card accounts display your current debt, credit utilization, and minimum payment due.

Under 30% Good — lenders see this as healthy
30 – 50% Caution — consider paying down
Over 50% High — may affect credit score
You can set a custom APR and minimum payment percentage for each credit card in account settings.

Savings Goals

Each goal tracks progress toward a target amount and forecasts your completion date based on your actual contribution history.

If no contributions have been made yet, Thrust cannot project a completion date. Add your first contribution to activate the forecast.
